KEYBOARD METHODS
How to type Ü and ü
01 / WINDOWS
Use the numeric keypad
Turn Num Lock on. Hold Alt, enter 0252, and release Alt for ü. Use 0220 for Ü.
Include the leading zero. These sequences use the numeric keypad, not the number row above the letters. If your laptop has no keypad, use Character Map or copy ü from this page.
02 / MAC
Use Option + U
With the US or ABC input layout, press Option + U, release both keys, then press u for ü. Hold Shift with the final letter for Ü.
In supported apps, you can also hold the u key and choose ü from the accent menu. Other input layouts may use a different shortcut.
03 / PHONE & TABLET
Hold the letter key
On the on-screen keyboard, touch and hold u, then slide to ü. Switch to uppercase before holding the key if you need Ü.
The choices depend on the active keyboard and language. If the umlaut is missing, add a suitable language keyboard or use the copy button.
04 / WORD FOR WINDOWS
Convert a Unicode value
Type 00FC, then press Alt + X for ü. For Ü, use 00DC. Select only the code before converting if it follows other letters or digits.
On a US keyboard, you can also press Ctrl+Shift+semicolon, release, then type u. This shortcut belongs to Word; it does not apply to every app.

MEANING & SPELLING
Using ü correctly
In German, ü is the umlaut form of u. It appears in grün (green), über (over or above), and the place name München. It represents a different vowel from u, so the dots are part of the word, not decoration.
grüngreen
In Spanish, ü is a diaeresis, as in pingüino. In that context, it indicates that the u is pronounced in a güi or güe sequence. Do not apply the German ue replacement to Spanish words. Ü is also a letter in Turkish.
When you cannot enter ü
ü → ue
In German, use ue only when the actual umlaut cannot be entered or accepted. For example, Über → Ueber. Use the original character whenever Unicode text is supported.
Preserve capitalization. The title-case replacement is Ue, while all-capital text uses UE. For a personal name or official record, follow the spelling supplied by the person or issuing authority.
This is a German fallback. Do not apply it automatically to ü in another language or name.
Check the shape of the mark
Ü and Ú are different characters. Ü has two dots; Ú has an acute accent. If you are copying a word or name, choose the mark used in its original spelling.
Common questions about ü
Does Ü keep its dots in uppercase?
Yes. Ü is the uppercase form of ü. The umlaut remains part of the letter when you capitalize it.
Why does Unicode call it “with diaeresis”?
Unicode uses the name “Latin letter U with diaeresis” to identify this character. In a German word, those dots serve as an umlaut. A character name and a mark’s role in a language are different kinds of information.
Why can’t I paste ü into a form?
Some forms accept only a limited character set. Try pasting into a plain-text document to check that copying worked. If the document shows the correct letter but the form rejects it, follow the form’s character or spelling requirements.
