KEYBOARD METHODS

How to type e with accent

01 / WINDOWS ALT CODES

Use the numeric keypad

Turn Num Lock on. Hold Alt, enter 0233 on the numeric keypad, and release Alt to produce é.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

02 / MAC

Use an accent key or menu

On the US or ABC layout, press Option + E and then E for é, Option + grave and then E for è, Option + I and then E for ê, or Option + U and then E for ë. Hold E to use the accent menu. Use Character Viewer for ē if it is not shown.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

03 / IPHONE, IPAD & ANDROID

Hold the base letter

Touch and hold E on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

04 / WORD FOR WINDOWS & INTERNATIONAL LAYOUTS

Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without U+, then press Alt + X. For example, type 00E9 and convert it to é. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

With the US-International keyboard enabled, type apostrophe then E for é, grave then E for è, Shift + 6 then E for ê, or quotation mark then E for ë. Press Space after a dead key when you want the punctuation mark by itself.

MEANING & SPELLING

Using e with accent correctly

É is common in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and many loanwords. È appears in languages including French and Italian. Ê and ë have their own language-specific jobs, while ē commonly represents a long vowel in writing systems that use a macron.

In French, é and è normally represent different vowel qualities. The diaeresis in Noël indicates that adjacent vowels are pronounced separately. These examples explain the marks, but pronunciation still depends on the language and word.

English often preserves é in borrowed words and names, such as café, résumé, and Beyoncé. Use the spelling preferred by the person or publication. A plain e may be understood in informal text, but it is not always the exact spelling.

É and È point in different directions

The acute accent in é rises to the right. The grave accent in è falls to the right. Ê has a pointed circumflex, ë has two dots, and ē has a horizontal macron.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about e with accent

What is the most common E with accent?

É and é are especially common across European languages and English loanwords. The correct choice still depends on the exact word you are writing.

Are é and è the same letter?

No. They use different accent marks and can represent different sounds or meanings. Copy the version found in the original spelling.

How do I type é on a Mac?

On the US or ABC layout, press Option + E, release the keys, and press E. Hold Shift for É. You can also hold the E key and choose é from the accent menu.

Why does ë have two dots?

The two-dot mark is called a diaeresis in words such as Noël, where it can show that neighboring vowels are pronounced separately. Its function can differ in another language.
