The best method depends on how often you type the character, whether you know its name or code, and which input layout is active. Use this table as a starting point, then follow the detailed instructions below.

Use the Chromebook accent menu for an occasional letter

On supported ChromeOS versions and input methods, hold a letter key until the accent menu appears, then choose the numbered option or select the character. This is useful for a short name or a single borrowed word.

The menu varies with the active language and may not include every Latin character. If the form you need is absent, use a language input method or copy the verified character from its reference page.

1. Place the cursor where the accented letter belongs.
2. Hold the base letter until the available forms appear.
3. Choose the displayed number or select the required character.
4. Check the result before continuing, especially when several marks look similar.

Add a language or international input method

Open ChromeOS Settings, choose Device, then Keyboard and Change input settings. Under Input methods, add the language or keyboard you need. Older versions may place these controls under Languages and inputs. A keyboard layout controls what the keys produce, even though the labels on the physical keys stay the same.

For multilingual Western European text, the US International input method provides dead-key combinations. For sustained Czech, Polish, Romanian, Turkish, or Vietnamese writing, use the language-specific method because it supplies the full practical set and familiar key behavior.

Understand dead keys before using US International

A dead key waits for another key. An apostrophe followed by E can produce é, while a quotation mark followed by U can produce ü on a compatible international layout. To enter the punctuation mark itself, press the dead key and then Space.

If punctuation suddenly waits or changes a following letter, check the input indicator in the shelf. ChromeOS may be using an international or language layout rather than the ordinary US layout.

Switch input methods without losing your place

ChromeOS documents Ctrl+Shift+Space for moving to the next enabled input method and Ctrl+Space for returning to the previous one. The current input abbreviation appears near the clock.

Test the layout in a plain text field before typing an important name or code. Application shortcuts can overlap with input shortcuts, so copy and paste remains a dependable fallback.
