## How to type z with accent

### Use the numeric keypad

Turn Num Lock on. Hold Alt, enter `0158` on the numeric keypad, and release Alt to produce ž.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

### Use an accent key or menu

Hold Z to check the accent menu, use Character Viewer, or add the language keyboard that contains the required letter. Polish input is best for repeated ź and ż, while Czech and several neighboring layouts provide ž.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold Z on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

### Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without `U+`, then press Alt + X. For example, type `017E` and convert it to ž. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

A layout with acute or caron dead keys can produce some Z forms, but the exact sequence depends on the selected layout. In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal Unicode value from the table and press Alt+X.

## Using z with accent correctly

Polish distinguishes ź with acute from ż with dot above. Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Estonian, and several other languages use ž with caron. The remaining forms mainly serve specific orthographies or scholarly transcription.

Ź, Ż, and Ž are not stylistic versions of the same letter. Their marks, pronunciations, alphabet positions, and language associations differ. Copy the spelling from the source instead of selecting by appearance alone.

Ƶ and ƶ are Z with stroke, not Z with an accent. They are outside the main grid because a stroke is not a diacritic. A combining mark can also create additional visual Z forms, but precomposed letters are easier to search, validate, and copy when they exist.

**Ź, Ż, and Ž are three different letters**

Ź has an acute accent that leans to the right, Ż has a single dot above, and Ž has a caron shaped like a small wedge. In Polish, ź and ż are distinct. Ž belongs to a different set of languages and has its own code point.
