## How to type y with accent

### Use the numeric keypad

Turn Num Lock on. Hold Alt, enter `0253` on the numeric keypad, and release Alt to produce ý.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

### Use an accent key or menu

On the US or ABC layout, use Option + E and then Y for ý, Option + I and then Y for ŷ, or Option + U and then Y for ÿ. Hold Y to check the accent menu. Availability can vary by app and layout.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold Y on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

### Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without `U+`, then press Alt + X. For example, type `00FD` and convert it to ý. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

With the US-International keyboard enabled, apostrophe then Y can produce ý, Shift + 6 then Y can produce ŷ, and quotation mark then Y can produce ÿ when the layout supports that combination.

## Using y with accent correctly

Ý and ý appear in languages including Czech, Slovak, Icelandic, and Faroese. Ŷ and ŷ are used in Welsh. Ÿ and ÿ occur much less often, including in some French names and place names.

The uppercase form of ÿ is Ÿ, not a plain Y. Fonts and apps may make the two dots look slightly different, but the Unicode character remains the same.

Use the spelling provided by the original language or name holder. Removing the mark can change pronunciation or produce a different spelling.
