## How to type s with accent

### Use Character Map or Unicode

ś has no dependable legacy Alt sequence across ordinary Windows configurations. Copy it, use Character Map, enable a language keyboard, or enter its Unicode value in Microsoft Word.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

### Use an accent key or menu

The US or ABC layout does not provide one simple shortcut for every accented S. Hold S to check the accent menu, use Character Viewer, enable the relevant language keyboard, or copy the exact letter from this page.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold S on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

### Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without `U+`, then press Alt + X. For example, type `015B` and convert it to ś. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

Language layouts are best for repeated entry. Polish provides ś, Czech and neighboring layouts provide š, Turkish provides ş, Romanian provides ș, and Esperanto input methods provide ŝ. In Word, enter the Unicode value and press Alt+X.

## Using s with accent correctly

Polish uses ś, many Slavic and Baltic languages use š, Turkish uses ş, Romanian uses ș, and Esperanto uses ŝ. The marks carry language-specific sound and alphabet information.

The Turkish ş and Romanian ș are especially easy to confuse. One has a cedilla and the other has a comma below. Older or incomplete text systems sometimes substitute one for the other, but Unicode encodes them separately.

Sharp S, written ß or ẞ, is not an accented S. It is a German letter with its own character identity. Use the German sharp S page when that is the shape you need.

**Ş with cedilla is different from Ș with comma below**

The mark under Ş is a cedilla with a curved hook shape. The mark under Ș is a comma. They can look similar in small fonts, so check the Unicode value or the language when accuracy matters.

### Which S with accent is used in Polish?

Polish uses Ś and ś. It also uses other S-related letters such as Sz as a letter combination, but that is not a single accented character.

### What is the difference between š and ŝ?

Š has a caron shaped like a small inverted roof. Ŝ has a circumflex shaped like a pointed roof. They are different letters used in different languages.

### Does Romanian use ş or ș?

Standard Romanian uses Ș and ș with a comma below. Ş and ş with cedilla are separate characters associated with other orthographies, including Turkish.

### How do I type ś in Microsoft Word?

Type 015B and press Alt+X for lowercase ś. Type 015A and press Alt+X for uppercase Ś.

### Is ß an S with an accent?

No. ß is German sharp S, also called Eszett. It is not made by adding an accent mark to S.
