## How to type r with accent

### Use Character Map or Unicode

ř has no dependable legacy Alt sequence across ordinary Windows configurations. Copy it, use Character Map, enable a language keyboard, or enter its Unicode value in Microsoft Word.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

### Use an accent key or menu

Use Character Viewer for the complete set. A Czech input source is more practical for repeated ř, while the accent menu may expose only some R variants depending on the app and selected layout.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold R on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

### Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without `U+`, then press Alt + X. For example, type `0159` and convert it to ř. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

Czech and Slovak layouts provide their language-specific R forms. In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal Unicode value shown in the table and press Alt+X.

Paste the character itself into normal text. HTML entities belong in HTML source. Unicode labels use hexadecimal notation, while HTML decimal entities and Windows Alt codes use decimal numbers.

## Using r with accent correctly

Czech ř is a distinct alphabet letter and is not interchangeable with plain r or Slovak ŕ. Dotted and underlined R forms are especially important in scholarly transliteration, where the mark carries technical meaning.

The broad family page is useful when the base letter is known but the mark is not. Match the mark carefully: the acute leans to the right, the caron forms a small wedge, and a cedilla sits below the letter.

Precomposed Unicode characters help maintain consistent searching and validation. When a precomposed form exists, copying it is usually simpler than building the same appearance with a combining mark.

**Ř, Ŕ, and Ŗ are not interchangeable**

Ř has a caron, Ŕ has an acute accent, and Ŗ has a cedilla. They have distinct code points and language roles. A similar font shape does not make them equivalent.
