## What is an ogonek?

An ogonek is a small hook attached below a vowel. Its name comes from a Polish word meaning “little tail.” It is an orthographic mark, not decorative punctuation.

Polish uses ą and ę. Lithuanian uses ą, ę, į, and ų. Their modern pronunciation and spelling roles depend on the language, so the same visible mark should not be assigned one universal sound.

The precomposed characters above are suitable for ordinary text. Combining ogonek remains useful for combinations that lack a precomposed Unicode character.

**An ogonek is not a cedilla**

The ogonek usually hooks from the lower right of a vowel. A cedilla is a different diacritic with different character names and language roles. Font styles can make them look closer than they are.
