## How to type o with accent

### Use the numeric keypad

Turn Num Lock on. Hold Alt, enter `0243` on the numeric keypad, and release Alt to produce ó.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

### Use an accent key or menu

On the US or ABC layout, use Option + E for ó, Option + grave for ò, Option + I for ô, Option + N for õ, or Option + U for ö, then type O. Hold the O key to open the accent menu. Use Character Viewer for ō if needed.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold O on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

### Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without `U+`, then press Alt + X. For example, type `00F3` and convert it to ó. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

With the US-International keyboard enabled, type apostrophe then O for ó, grave then O for ò, Shift + 6 then O for ô, Shift + grave then O for õ, or quotation mark then O for ö.

Paste the character itself into normal text. HTML entities belong in HTML source. Unicode labels use hexadecimal notation, while HTML decimal entities and Windows Alt codes use decimal numbers.

## Using o with accent correctly

Spanish and Portuguese use ó, Italian uses ò in words such as però, French uses ô, Portuguese uses õ, and German uses ö as an umlaut. The macron in ō commonly marks a long vowel or appears in romanization.

The two dots in German ö are meaningful. Schon means “already,” while schön means “beautiful.” In Swedish and Finnish, ö is also an alphabet letter, so German replacement rules do not automatically apply.

Preserve accents in personal names, place names, and quoted words. If a destination does not support the character, check its rules before removing the mark or substituting another spelling.

**Ö is not the same as Ø**

Ö has two dots above the O. Ø has a diagonal stroke through it and is used in languages including Danish and Norwegian. They have different Unicode values and should not replace each other.

## Questions about o with accent

### What is the difference between ó and ò?

Ó has an acute accent that rises to the right. Ò has a grave accent that falls to the right. Their use and pronunciation depend on the language.

### Is ö always a German umlaut?

No. It functions as an umlaut in German, but ö is also a letter in languages such as Swedish and Finnish. The same shape can have a different linguistic role.

### Can I use ø instead of ö?

No. Ø is a separate letter with a stroke through it. Use ö only when the original spelling has two dots.

### How do I type ó in Microsoft Word?

Type 00F3 and press Alt+X for ó, or use Ctrl + apostrophe followed by O. You can also copy ó directly from this page.
