## How to type i with accent

### Use the numeric keypad

Turn Num Lock on. Hold Alt, enter `0237` on the numeric keypad, and release Alt to produce í.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

### Use an accent key or menu

On the US or ABC layout, use Option + E for í, Option + grave for ì, Option + I for î, or Option + U for ï, then type I. Hold the I key to open the accent menu. Use Character Viewer for ī if it is not shown.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold I on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

### Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without `U+`, then press Alt + X. For example, type `00ED` and convert it to í. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

With the US-International keyboard enabled, type apostrophe then I for í, grave then I for ì, Shift + 6 then I for î, or quotation mark then I for ï.

Paste the character itself into normal text. HTML entities belong in HTML source. Unicode labels use hexadecimal notation, while HTML decimal entities and Windows Alt codes use decimal numbers.

## Using i with accent correctly

Spanish uses í to show written stress, Italian uses ì, and French uses î and ï. The macron in ī often marks vowel length or appears in transliteration systems.

The diaeresis in naïve indicates that the neighboring vowels are pronounced separately. In another language, the same two-dot shape can serve a different role.

Keep the accent in names, quotations, and language-learning text. A plain i is a different character even when an informal system removes the mark.

**Í, Ì, Î, Ï, and Ī use different marks**

Í has an acute accent, Ì has a grave accent, Î has a circumflex, Ï has two dots, and Ī has a horizontal macron. Compare the shape and direction before copying.

## Questions about i with accent

### What is the difference between í and ì?

Í uses an acute accent that rises to the right. Ì uses a grave accent that falls to the right. Their pronunciation and purpose depend on the language.

### Why does ï have two dots?

The mark is called a diaeresis in words such as naïve. It can show that adjacent vowels are pronounced separately.

### How do I type í on a Mac?

On the US or ABC layout, press Option + E, release the keys, and press I. Hold Shift with the final I for Í.

### Why is there no standard Windows Alt code for ī?

The familiar four-digit Alt sequences mainly cover an older character set. In Microsoft Word, type 012B and press Alt+X for ī, or copy it from this page.
