## Uppercase Ë and lowercase ë

Ë and ë are Latin E with diaeresis, often searched as E with two dots, E with dots, or E umlaut. The two dots can show that the vowel is pronounced separately from a neighboring vowel, but the precise function depends on the language.

## How to type e with diaeresis

### Use the numeric keypad

Turn Num Lock on. Hold Alt, enter `0235` on the numeric keypad, and release Alt to produce ë.

Use the numeric keypad for listed Alt codes, not the number row. A listed code may depend on Windows and the active character set.

### Use an accent key or menu

On the US or ABC layout, press Option + U, release both keys, then press E. Use Shift with the final E for Ë. You can also hold E and choose ë from the accent menu when the app supports it.

Shortcuts described here assume the US or ABC input layout. Another selected layout can assign different keys.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold E on the on-screen keyboard. Keep your finger down, slide to the character you need, and release. Switch to uppercase before holding the key for a capital letter.

The available characters depend on your keyboard and enabled languages. Add a relevant language keyboard if the required form does not appear.

### Convert a code or use dead keys

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type a hexadecimal value without `U+`, then press Alt + X. For example, type `00EB` and convert it to ë. Select only the code before converting if another letter or number comes immediately before it.

With the US-International keyboard enabled, press the quotation mark dead key, then E. Use Shift with E for Ë. In Microsoft Word, type 00EB and press Alt+X for ë, or type 00CB and press Alt+X for Ë.

## Using e with diaeresis correctly

Albanian treats Ë and ë as an alphabet letter. French, Dutch, and several other languages use the diaeresis in particular words or names to signal language-specific vowel behavior. Preserve the spelling supplied by the language, publication, or name holder.

The phrase E umlaut is common in searches because the umlaut and diaeresis share the same two-dot shape. In linguistic terms, umlaut names a Germanic sound change and the German spelling mark associated with it. Ë in Albanian, French, or Dutch is normally described as E with diaeresis, not a German umlaut letter.

Ë and ë are Latin letters. They are not the Cyrillic letters Ё and ё, even though both pairs carry two dots and can look similar in some fonts. Their Unicode values, alphabets, and language uses are different.

**Ë is not Cyrillic Ё**
