## How do Czech and Slovak letter sets differ?

Czech and Slovak are closely related West Slavic languages that share many acute and caron letters. Their practical character sets are not identical.

Czech includes ě, ř, and ů. Slovak includes ä, ĺ, ľ, ô, and ŕ. The combination ch has a special alphabetic role in both languages, but it contains two Unicode characters and therefore is not a single copy button.

Letters with marks keep those marks in uppercase. Names and quotations should retain the original language’s spelling even when an English keyboard makes entry less convenient.

**Czech ř and Slovak ŕ are different**

Ř has a caron and is characteristic of Czech. Ŕ has an acute accent and occurs in Slovak. They have different marks, pronunciations, and Unicode values.
