## How to type and insert these characters

### Use Alt codes for Ç and ç

With Num Lock on, use Alt+0199 for Ç or Alt+0231 for ç. Character Map, language layouts, and Word Unicode entry cover the other letters.

### Press Option + C for ç

On the US or ABC layout, Option + C produces ç and Shift + Option + C produces Ç. Use Character Viewer or a language keyboard for the other cedilla letters.

### Hold the base letter

Touch and hold C, S, T, G, K, L, N, or R and choose the marked form when offered. Add a relevant language keyboard when the form is absent.

### Use Ctrl + comma or Alt+X

## What is a cedilla?

A cedilla is a hook-shaped diacritic placed below a letter. It is best known through ç, but Unicode also includes cedilla forms of G, K, L, N, R, S, and T.

French uses ç to keep a soft C sound before a, o, or u. Portuguese, Catalan, Turkish, Azerbaijani, and other languages use cedilla letters according to their own spelling systems.

Romanian standard spelling uses Ș and Ț with comma below, not Ş and Ţ with cedilla. Fonts and legacy text can make the marks look confusingly similar, so confirm the language and Unicode character.

Ş and Ţ carry a cedilla. Ș and Ț carry a comma below. They may look similar in a small or unsuitable font, but Unicode encodes them separately and Romanian requires the comma-below forms.
