## What is a caron?

A caron is a wedge-shaped diacritic placed above many Latin letters. It is also called a háček in Czech contexts. The caron is part of the spelling and can create a separate alphabet letter.

Czech uses a broad caron set that includes č, ď, ě, ň, ř, š, ť, and ž. Slovak shares several forms and adds ľ. Other languages use selected caron letters rather than the full collection.

The lowercase ď, ľ, and ť can use compact apostrophe-like glyph shapes instead of a clearly centered wedge. That typographic form does not turn the mark into an apostrophe.

**A caron is not a breve or circumflex**

The caron points downward like a small v. A circumflex points upward, while a breve is rounded. Font design can compress the caron beside tall lowercase letters, so the encoded identity is more reliable than shape alone.

### What is the upside-down circumflex called?
