### Acute accent

A diagonal stroke rising to the right. It can mark stress, vowel quality, tone, or a distinct letter.

### Grave accent

À à È è Ì ì Ò ò Ù ù

A diagonal stroke falling to the right. Its function varies among French, Italian, Portuguese, Welsh, and other writing systems.

### Circumflex

 â Ê ê Î î Ô ô Û û

A pointed roof above a letter. It can affect pronunciation, spelling, tone, or historical interpretation.

### Tilde

à ã Ñ ñ Õ õ

A wavy line above a letter. It can indicate nasalization, tone, or a separate alphabet letter.

### Diaeresis

Ä ä Ë ë Ï ï Ö ö Ü ü

Two dots above a letter. The same encoded forms can function as a diaeresis, an umlaut, or part of an alphabet letter.

### Cedilla

Ç ç Ş ş

A hook-shaped mark below a letter. Do not confuse it with the separate comma-below characters used in Romanian.

### Caron

Č č Ď ď Ě ě Ň ň Ř ř Š š Ť ť Ž ž

A small wedge above a letter. It appears prominently in Czech and Slovak spelling and in several other Latin alphabets.

### Macron

Ā ā Ē ē Ī ī Ō ō Ū ū

A horizontal line above a letter. It can mark vowel length or serve a defined role in an orthography or transliteration system.

### Ogonek

Ą ą Ę ę Į į Ų ų

A small hook attached below a letter. It is distinct from a cedilla and has language-specific sound and spelling roles.

## How to type and insert these characters

### Choose the finished letter

Select the complete character above, then paste it into your document. Copying the finished precomposed letter is usually more dependable than copying a loose accent mark.

### Use Character Map or a language layout

Character Map can insert letters that have no familiar Alt code. For repeated writing, add the keyboard layout for the language and switch layouts from the taskbar.

### Hold the base letter

On Mac, iPhone, iPad, and many Android keyboards, hold the base letter and choose a marked form. The available choices depend on the active keyboard and language.

### Use Unicode when precision matters

In Microsoft Word, type a hexadecimal code and press Alt+X. In HTML, insert the Unicode character directly in UTF-8 text or use the decimal entity shown in the table.

For ordinary writing, copy and paste the character itself. Use an HTML entity only in HTML source. A listed Windows Alt code requires a numeric keypad and may depend on the active character set.

## What is an accent mark?

An accent mark is a familiar name for a diacritic attached to a letter. Depending on the language, the mark may indicate stress, pronunciation, vowel length, tone, grammatical information, or a distinct alphabet letter.

The same shape does not always perform the same job. The two dots in German ü are an umlaut, while the same encoded character can be described as a diaeresis when it separates neighboring vowels. Spanish ñ is a letter in its own right, even though the visible mark is a tilde.

Unicode can represent many accented letters as one precomposed character or as a base letter followed by a combining mark. They may look identical, but they contain different code-point sequences. Use the finished character supplied by the original spelling whenever possible.

**The accent key is not always the accent character**

Keyboard punctuation such as apostrophe, grave, caret, and tilde may act as dead keys, spacing symbols, or ordinary punctuation. A finished accented letter such as é is a separate text result. Copy the completed letter when that is what the destination requires.

Common Latin-script marks include the acute, grave, circumflex, tilde, diaeresis, cedilla, macron, caron, breve, ring above, and ogonek.

### Are accent marks and diacritics the same?

Accent mark is the common everyday term. Diacritic is broader and includes marks that are not necessarily used to show stress.

### Can an accent change the meaning of a word?

Yes. Depending on the language, removing or changing a mark can alter pronunciation, stress, meaning, grammar, or the identity of the letter.

### Why does an accented letter look different after pasting?

The destination applies its own font. Shape, weight, and spacing can change even when the underlying Unicode character stays the same.

### Should I copy the mark by itself?

Usually no. Copy the complete accented letter. Use a combining mark only when you deliberately need to build a sequence that has no suitable precomposed character.
